World Cup Finals 2002

Robbie Keane celebrates one of his 3 goals in the finals. A new Irish record at the World Cup.

16th June * Ireland 1 - 1 Spain (Spain win 3-2 on pens) Scorers : Morientes (8), Robbie Keane (90 pen) Despite falling behind to an early goal Ireland put in another fantastic performance and came so close to winning the game. Keane and Duff yet again were outstanding and the future looks good for the team even after the loss of Quinn and Stauton.

Germany 7 Points
Ireland 5 points
Cameroon 4 points
Saudi Arabia 0 points

11 June * Ireland 3 - 0 Saudi Arabia Scorers : Robbie Keane (7), Breen (61), Duff (87) Ireland's biggest ever win in the World Cup Finals put's us through to the last 16. A fantastic early goal by Robbie set us on the way although the Saudis had chances. Man of the match Damien Duff deserved his goal in the end after another great performance.

5 June * Ireland 1 - 1 Germany Scorers : Klose (19), Robbie Keane (92) Robbie saves the day thanks to some great work by super sub Niall Quinn. Ireland deserved at least a draw as Germany tried to hang onto a one goal lead.

1 June * Ireland 1 - 1 Cameroon Scorers : Mboma (39), Holland (52) Matt Holland does it once again, a great goal just when we needed it. After a very poor first half Ireland turned the tables and could have won the game in the second half. Still it was a fair result on balance.

23 May * Roy Keane has been thrown out of the Irish team by Mick McCarthy. It seems after a row where Keane verbally abused McCarthy the Irish manager sent Keane packing. It looks like Roy will never play for Ireland again. Steve Staunton is the new Irish captain and he has come out in support of McCarthy's actions along with senior players Niall Quinn and Alan Kelly.
